To allow them to develop their own personalities without expectation (you may even learn something from them), to love unconditionally, to teach them respect for themselves and others. To explain that you may not like what they have done but still love who they are. To listen to them, truely listen to what they have to say. (respectful). To BE PRESENT and available. To love unconditionally (worth saying twice - important!!)

That you want to be a parent because you are physically, emotionally, financially and spiritually capable and you will raise children to be assets to our society, not burdens.

They don't come with a guide, so do the best you can for your child, love them, be there for them, be honest with them, teach them to be accepting of others, teach them independance, teach them to laugh at themselves and above all love themselves.
