1. Nipple Stimulation
Nipple stimulation causes the release of oxytocin, which causes contractions which COULD turn into active labor. You have to do it for at least 20 minutes to see any results. It may or may not start labor, depending on if your body is ready.

2. Evening Primrose Oil
Inserting 2 EPO capsules vaginally at night before bed can help to ripen your cervix. You can prick them with a pin and rub the oil into your cervix if you want. Start this about 37 weeks. This DOES NOT cause contractions, it just helps to ripen your cervix.

3. Red Raspberry Leaf
Red Raspberry Leaf Tea (RRLT) can help to tone your uterus so that your contractions are more productive when they come. It DOES NOT cause contractions. It doesn't ripen your cervix, as I said instead it tones the uterus.

4. Black Cohosh Tincture
DO NOT take blue or black cohosh unless you are under the supervision of a caregiver who is VERY experienced in working with herbs. (Many caregivers suggest that you take BOTH blue and black TOGETHER for the best results.)

There are risks to taking cohosh and there are certain conditions that may make it a bad idea for a mother to use cohosh. Blue or Black Cohosh are emenagogues. It is often seen as a last ditch method, but if artificial induction is threatened this is a much more natural form of induction. DO NOT USE cohosh if you are anemic or have a history of postpartum bleeding, high blood pressure or excessive blood loss during birth.

BLUE cohosh -
There are some unpleasant side effects from blue cohosh, including elevated blood pressure and blood sugar levels, nausea, severe stomach pain, and toxicity. There have been two case reports where blue cohosh was blamed for severe cardiac toxicity in infants whose mothers used the herb to induce labour. In addition, the plant contains a toxic compound which is known to cause birth defects in cattle.

5. Castor Oil
Castor oil doesn't ripen your cervix. It causes you to run to the bathroom which can cause you to have contractions. It may or may not bring on labor but is pretty much guaranteed to make mom very uncomfortable for a number or hours running to the bathroom. There is also an increased risk of baby passing his first BM in the womb, which can be dangerous if he aspirates it.

You didn't mention SEX. Semen ripens the cervix. If you go in to be medically induced, they often use a prostaglandin gel that is made from PIG SEMEN! ICK! Wouldn't you rather have hubby's semen instead? Orgasm can also cause contractions, which could turn into active labor.

HONESTLY.....
Be patient. ALL babies DO eventually come out. I've never heard of a woman who has been PG forever. :-) 38 to 42 weeks is considered normal. And how certain are you of the accuracy of your due date? Trust your body and your baby to know when it is time for labor.

Go get a massage to balance your body and help you relaxed. If you are in balance, labor will be easier when it comes. Consider getting a haircut or getting your nails done. You won't have time for those things soon!

I have used EPO and RRLT in pregnancy. I wouldn't suggest trying to do anything to induce labor unless you were facing a medical induction.

Semen contains xmall amounts of prostaglandin which can cause the cervix to thin and start to dialate. They actually have prostaglandin gels your doctors can apply to the cervix in the office but they have such a strong effect some doctors do not like to use them. I have heard many Ob-GYN's say that the most natural and effective method is to have as much sex as you comfortably can! Besides you've got to give your husband a little feast before the fast begins! The more "natural" the start of labor is the easier it is usually and the quicker you recover from it afterward.

It's so hard to wait for the first one! Good Luck!

I heard number 2 works. I never did any of them but castor oil and that didn't help. I had a c-section so I guess I dind't need to ripen mine anyways. Good Luck. I hope this helped.

Actually, having sex with your husband is the best. Semen contains prostoglandin which is what is used in hospital to help the cervix soften (put in a cap and cap placed on cervix). I actually just read that prostoglandin is more effective if ingested (odd and may gross some out), which means giving hubby a bj and swallowing.
