The olive tree is in a big terra cotta pot. It needs to stay in the pot. It looks dead, but if I break off a twig there's still sap running inside. Should I trim it back to almost a stump?

my dad usually hits his fruit bearing trees with the blunt end of an axe. give it 12 months and it'll better than new! (i'm serious, don't know why or how, but i've seen it work)

First make sure there is no disease or insects that might have attacked your tree. If it's lost it's leaves because of bugs or a fungus...you might not need to cut it all the way back to a stump.

Also...maybe it's the natural time for you tree to loose it's leaves or something???

If all else fails, yes...trim the tree down to about 4-12 inches depending on the size of the tree. Then, maybe repot the tree...not necessarily into a new pot, but pull it up and check the root system if at all possible and trim off any old, dried or decayed roots. Then repot with fresh potting soil and a well balanced fertilizer.

Good luck.

Trim it back to the first set of leaves. Repot with fresh soil and water well. Keep in a fairly shaded spot until you see new growth. Do not fertilize it during this time, but keep it moist and not wet. As long as there is sap, it's alive and not dead.

Yes you should cut the tree back to almost a stump, because if thats what's going to keep the tree alive do it. Plus the olive tree will grow back in no time.

This sounds kinda funny, but seriously in the bible Jesus told a parable about this subject said Cut it down..after you fertilize it -- being in a pot might not be a good thing for it.
