keep them in sections, with thier genres, and then in alphabetical order. or you could skip the genre part. but make sure they are shelved.

I have a collection of over 1000. I keep an updated list in my computer. They are organized in alphabetical order (drop the A, The from the title). They are stored on the shelves in a closet. I go to the pc to pick the one I want to watch and retrieve it from the closet. When I am done, I put them back in the closet in the proper location.
I do the same to my CD collection.

Alphabetical. I dont like when its organized any other way. I actually HATE going to a video store when i am looking for a specific movie, cus its always organized by genre, and so many movies fit into more than one catagory. Alphabetize everything, and you can find anything.

Mine are in alphabetical order. I have a feeling that if I had 300, I would probably switch to organizing by genre, though.

I had shelves built that don't take up a lot of space because there as wide as the DVDs I have over 600 all in alphabetical order. How do find what you want if there not.

I have nearly 700 that are kept neatly in tall bookcases, each is numbered AND kept on a CD-RW list for easy access. I keep collections separate from single films, example, one list/set of shelves for single films and another for sets like DIE HARD trilogy, LETHAL WEAPON foursome, CSI Complete Seasons 1-5, QUANTUM LEAP complete seasons 1-4, The Harry Potter Films, LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy Etc. Etc. Simple system and other than keeping sets/ collections apart from others, they are not listed by genre. Each is listed by title.

My DVD's are in a case that can hold 300 DVD's or so in random order. My television shows on DVD are in their original cases in alphabetical order on a shelf.

I organize mine in several ways. I have three shelving units.
First, all the Christmas videos and video games. Both are alphabetized, the video games are also grouped by game system.
Next, all boxed sets and movie series (those with sequels) are together and TV series are together.
This unit also houses my CDs (which are grouped alphabetically by artist, then the movie/musical soundtracks are alphabetized by title, then Christmas CDs alphabetized by artist.
Last shelves, movies are grouped by musicals, animation, baseball/sports movies, war movies etc.

Generate a spreadsheet first to categorize your movie collection and from there you can arrange it however you want. Furniture shops have media shelves for sale or from your question you sound like you have a lot of time on your hands - fabricate your own shelving from materials available at a local hardware store.

I am very anal with my movies to be honest. I have them all in alphabetical order from left to right, each shelf a different type of movie- meaning top shelf is all action, next is comedies, next are kids movies, next are kung-fu and westerns (least favorite).
I dont like them to be mixed up at all and all movies have to be wiped before being put back into boxes.
