I answered this many times because I really feel this is the saddest song I ever heard: Jimmy Somerville singing For a Friend.
He wrote it for a friend of his who died with AIDS and I heard it when I discovered one of my friends did drugs.
I always linked these two things.

The song goes like this:

I never cried the way I cried over you,
As I put down the telephone and the world it carried on.
Somewhere else, someone else is crying too,
Another man has lost a friend, I bet he feels the way I do.
And now I'm left without, but you're here within.
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away,
All the memories of you come rushing back to me.
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away,
All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye.

Summer comes and I'd remember how we'd march,
We'd march for love and pride, together arm in arm.
Tears have turned, turned to anger and contempt,
I'll never let you down, a battle I have found.

And all the dreams we had, I will carry on.
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away,
All the memories of you come rushing back to me.
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away,
All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye, goodbye,
Goodbye, goodbye.

And all the dreams we've had, I will carry on.
As I watch the sun go down, watching the world fade away,
All the memories of you come rushing back to me.
As I watch the sun go down, and darkness comes to me,
All I want to do is kiss you once goodbye, goodbye,
Goodbye, goodbye.

Mary by Fisher. It's about this girl getting in a fight with Mary, the life of parties, and Mary dieing before amends are made.

Other notes:
Fisher made a song called I Will Love You, but it was cut from Message in a Bottle (a romance movie) because the test audience felt the song was too sad.

They also made a song called Missing about a father calling his son's exgirlfriend wondering where his son is and all she can think of is he is taking drugs with his friends.

Other good sad songs:
Firehead by Devics, a lover waiting for her lover to get down from his drug high.

Past all Concerns by Barzin: A lover finds out his lover is suicidal

Return to Sender by Mojave 3: this hopeless romantic gets rejected

In Love With a View by Mojave 3: The farmer loves this girl, but she would rather live in the big city and he knows they have to split up.

the song that begins--yesterday when i was young, the taste of life was sweet, as rain upon my tongue,
I teased at life, as if it were a foolish game, the way the evening breeze may tease a candle flame
The thousand dreams I dreamed, the splendid things I planned,

I always built, alas , on weak and shifting sand,
I lived by night, and shunned the naked light of day,
And only now, I see, how the years have run away
