I drive in New York all the time and often park/stand my vehicle at a fire hydrant ( note I am always in the driver's seat when doing this ) . Is it a violation or illegal to do that?

Answer the question if you really absolutely know the answer.
I've been doing this for a long time and many drivers do this. Traffic officers have seen me do this. they just made sure that there was a person in the driver's seat.

I dont think that is at all legal- up here where I live you can get a ticket if your wheels arent moving PAST the hydrant when the ticket cop comes by.

Yes. It is illegal to block a fire hydrant regardless of whether you are in the car.
Cops may cut you a break and just tell you to move if you are in the car, but technically they could ticket you.
