We've been to Florida about five times and have stayed in various places.
The most central place for all the parks (Disney and Universal) is International Drive. There's loads of hotels and restaurants, shops etc. It's really nice cause you can walk up and down the street without needing to get the car out which means there doesn't have to be a designated driver. There's a couple of Irish pubs which have entertainment. Ripleys and Wonderworks are there too.
Disney is about 10 minutes in a car and Universal is about 5 minutes in the other direction.
We stayed in Kissimmee and didn't like it. Although it's closer to Disney there's not as much to do if your staying around your hotel and it's a major highway road so it's not a nice walk.
There's some fantastic Disney hotels which are on site. The Grand Floridian is amazing but you'll need a small fortune to stay there. The disney boardwalk properties are also nice but again expensive. It is nice to stay on site but you'll come back broke cause you'll end up staying on site all the time and restaurants will cost a lot compared to the ones in town where you can get an all you can eat breakfast for $3 (£1.30).
Depending on how much money you have to spend there's a few properties I can reccommend.
Cheap - Quality Inn International. Really nice, great location.
Moderate - Wyndham International Drive. Lovely upmarket property (We stayed here on our honeymoon). Lagoon like pools and jacuzzi etc etc.
Other properties which are nice -
The Castle (owned by doubletree I think) on I Drive. It's literally like a castle with coloured turrets. The kids'll love it.
Peabody - lovely but expensive and a lot of business people stay there.
Hope that helps!

We have stayed at a Walt Disney World (WDW) resort and off site. Here's the pros and cons.

If you stay at WDW proper you can use their transportation system that will take you anywhere in the resort you want or need to go. This eliminates parking hassles at the resorts, but then limits you if you want to go off site. WDW will even pick you up at the airport and take you back when your vacation is over. If you want the complete WDW immersion experience, this is it.

If you stay off site you will definitely need a car to get back and forth to the parks. You will need to pay some additional money for the rental car, parking, gas, but you will also have more freedom to do other things. Which can be nice if you want to see more of Orlando than the WDW parks.

There are lots of great hotels in the International Drive Area. This is a concentrated area of hotels and shops that mainly caters to tourists. Check out reviews at www.tripadvisor.com and I'm sure you can find something in your budget that you will be happy with.

Good luck!

disneyland is not in florida, it is in California. Disney World is in Florida and my recommendation but it is a little more expensive is to stay on Disney property. Park your car and they do everything else for you. Tickets for things are sold in the hotel. A little more expensive but still a good deal considering.

Depends on your budget!!

There are some cheap hotels on International Drive....but personally speaking...I stayed at the Caribbean Beach Hotel in Disney....and I would recommend it to anyone!! The Hotel is part of the Disney Hotel chains....and it was very clean, comfortable and central for all the theme parks. Every few minutes the free buses would be there to pick you up to any of the theme parks or to Downtown Disney. If you bought anything in the theme parks, you could get it delivered for free to your hotel.

Hope you have a gr8 time!!!

do you want to spend your vacation with your kids in a resort where booze is banned. off site and as far away as possible. fort pierce is hicksville and not too far from there about 3 hour drive, cheap motels most with on site pools and booze shops nearby. as i dont know where your from, if your european apparantly it isn't the done thing to walk anywhere in floridas towns, big culture shock to me. you cant even walk up the side of the road without being seen as a weirdo or an outsider.
