Enrico Caruso is often thought of as the best singer. Actually, no one can claim the title of best singer because it's all a matter of personal preference.
Even in contests, when a person is judged to be the best, or the prettiest, that doesn't mean too much - - except that that person is the winner of that contest.
In any judged contests, the results would be completely different under another set of judges.
However, my vote would still go to Enrico, with Nelson Eddy as tops in his type of music.

Best voices in rock, Roy Orbison and Freddie Mercury. Not my two favorite singers, although I like them a lot, but I think they had the best quality, range, and natural ability. I'd also put David Byrne up there.

Ella Fitzgerald comes to mind as does Mariah Carey (too bad she is soo poppy and cheesy), Van Morrison (when he isnt drunk), EmmyLou Harris, and finally Sinead O'Connor.
