Please take some time to first off read the articles at the top of the page about Careers and Marriage and then the reader responses. Is this really what people are thinking today, and if it is does anyone find it as revolting as I do?

Wow, some people are sooo stupid. I can't believe the stuff I just read there. Oh my god. I hope that I never have to come near people like that. I love the two separate threads "Don't marry a career man" and "Don't marry a career woman." I really can't believe people who are so daft. I honestly hope they stay alone for the rest of their lives so they don't end up hurting some decent people.

I'm with you! Those people suck!

Well, first of all I'd remember that it's Forbes' job to sell news. While avoiding cynicism, seriously, I know that media loves a controversy in order to catch people's interest and make more money.

Well, overall, I agree with Corcoran more. Noer is at least trying to base his ideas on current studies, but I think he draws the wrong conclusions from them, or conclusions that are too universal in nature, or does not address the limitations of what was studied.

For example, Noer seems to attribute the shakier marriage to the woman's career. What seems more likely to me is that having two working spouses/parents simply allows the CURRENT weaknesses in the relationship to come to a head.

IOW, the problems, failed/unreasonable expectations, selfishness, and so on already exist -- it's just that in a family where the man works and the woman has agreed to stay at home and perform those duties, the two will not as easily bump elbows by wanting to fill the "same niche."

I also think a stay-at-home woman is much more apt to put up with a man's bad behavior than a man would be in putting up with his wife's -- she generally wants to make the marriage work out, wants to please the husband, and thus often goes too far to avoid controversy and allows herself to be short-changed in the process.

The career woman (more educated, more independent) tends to not do that as often. Problems and disagreements must be faced. Hence, more conflict and more possibility for divorce, as opposed to the woman who accepts her predetermined role and doesn't make waves.

As far as reader comments, I don't know how indicative they are of the population at large -- you're looking at a very small subsection (people who have online access, who read forbes.com, who have an interest in posting and the time to do so on this topic). I started to skim through them and got an idea of what was there, and it was all over the map.

How I see it?

People will believe what they want, sometimes they believe things for good reasons and sometimes for bad. Sometimes they just need more experience. Sometimes they're just venting. In any case, I've got a life of my own, and I know what I believe, and I don't want to become absorbed in these people's interpretations and miss out on my own life. They can believe what they want.

I wouldn't take the reader comments too hard, I'd just focus on the ideas expressed in the two columns.

that is why it is called 'dating' you find out more about a potential mate BEFORE you get married. With the divorce rate around 50% it is no wonder ppl are skeptical about getting married. But you have to want to make it work and not just throw in the towel at the first real disagreement or sign of trouble.

i just read it
what can i say?
i´m about gettin divorce i don´t have a career yet, but i´m on it, and in some way they are rigth. but not at all. it´s not a rule.
it´s confusing, but you will never know, if the person who you are getting married with, is the rigth person.
it´s just faith in that person thay may, make you happy.
