Pretty much all of the man-made elements are more expensive than diamonds (that whole big seperate box at the bottom of the periodic table). Some of them cost thousands of dollars (of research money, at least) *per atom*.

The Diamonds / platinum comparison is sort of apples and oranges, because they're valued by different standards. If I have one pound of platinum, it's worth a certain amount of money; but if I have one pound of diamonds, it could be worth anywhere from ten dollars to tens of millions of dollars depending on the size and quality of the diamonds.

The price of these two substances depends on their quality. The majority of the value of a diamond lies in its clarity, cut, and size (carat). Is the diamond large, clear, and does it have a quality cut, or is it diamond "dust" which is used on such things as drill bits and saws?
The value of platinum lies in its purity. Is it "pure" platinum or is it an alloy? Is the platinum in ore form?

There are other elements that are more expensive than platinum.

A man-made element (californium-252) sold for over $1000 per microgram. That is over approximately $350 BILLION per pound.

Of the naturally occuring elements, rhodium is much more (almost 4x) as expensive as platinum.

Oh there are much more expensive compounds out there. Most are man made, and those requiring custom synthesis can get really expensive really fast. Huprazine A runs about 100/mg depending on the sterioisomer.

Diamond and Platinum are rare substances and depending on demand and purity their cost is about even.

Depending on the work, diamonds and platinum seem to run neck and neck. I believe titanium is more expensive than platinum.

The thing with a lot of jewelry is WHO does the work that determines it's ultimate value. Certain artists rake in the big bucks for their work no matter what they use compared to unknowns who use exactly the same weight/carat.

As for me...marcasite, silver and white gold are what catch my eye along with sky blue quartz. Diamonds just don't rattle my cage at all.

So in the end, expense is relative and based on what people value and willing to pay...

Diamond is more expensive than platinum. Other elements are also expensive than these. Those used for defence purposes are not readilly available so they are of high costs...
