I don't think it was really necessary to do it... after all these years of considering it a planet.... why screw with the galaxy>? lol...

Very smart. when they discovered those additional heavenly bodies that look like very small planets, they had to add these to the already existing 9 planets, because they are like Pluto, but now they decided that Pluto is not a planet so that the others cannot be planets. I agree very much with this because the other 8 planets are big and beautiful! Pluto was more of an ugly rock!

I do think it was dumb even more after reading an article on yahoo, many of astronomers (though some are happy about it) are not pleased and have started a petition to have it reinstated. They said of 10 thousand astronomers at this convention only 4% actual voted since it was done on the very last day and many had already departed. Pluto seems to have been hijacked. I still considered Pluto a planet regardless if it gets reinstated. Their calling them Dwarf Planets.
I personnel think this should have been able to be voted by all the astronomers and not just a small percentage and I think common folk should have been able to give their input after all this is our Galaxy too

What's in a name? Is Greenland an island or a continent? Are HIV and SIV different virus species or different subspecies? Is a androgene insensitivity pseudohermafrodite a male or a female?
It's not about how we classify it, it's about what we know about it, which is fortunately a lot more than just a yes/no answer.
We always knew that it was something in between a planet and a comet. What more do you wanna know? Pluto is Pluto just as it always was.

Definitely smart yaar. There are lots and lots of similar type of bodies that revolve round the sun. Do u think that it's possible to name them and change the count of the planets of out solar system everytime we make such discoveries. The other reason I support this decision is that pluto is found to pass the track of neptune. So, I think that it's really smart.

I thought it was dumb because they thought it was a planet at first and now their claming it to be something else. I think they should just let Pluto be called a planet.

I think that the whole 'too small and not rounded, oval odd-longed shape' speech was really a way to remove another planet because they didn't feel like going out there and testing it for whatever. They are trying to remove a planet that was discovered 76 years ago!!
God bless!!

i have ONE major reason it was DUMB:
the discoverer of Pluto is dead. but his widow is still alive. she's 93 and now feels her late husbands work is nothing now.
way to go NASA- gang up on an old 93 year old woman who's glory has been nabbed out right below her feet. really classy.
and what was the rush ? couldn't wait another year or two till she croaked.

It was dumb. Planets don't care WHAT we think. They will still be there, planetizing themselves around the Sun.

Smart. It takes attention away from all the evil going on in the world and focuses people outside our world for, at least for a minute.

I don't think I'm alone when I say I'd like to see more and more planets fall under the ruthless domination of our solar system.
