instinct. they just "know".

the interesting part is that when animals are in captivity some lose that instinct....such a panda bears.
i was watching a documentary on them a while ago and many have gotten pregnant in captivity, however, when it comes time to take care of the baby-the mom doesn't want anything to do with it.

if any babies have been successful in captivity it's only been a very small few...like 1 or 2.

scientists don't know why this happens either.

nice question!

NOT a dumb question. The basic drive to reproduce and nurture seems to be kicked off by those good old hormones and a certain level of stuff hardwired into the critter. This is a general basic that's pretty built in, as a matter of survival. There ARE a few bugs, on occasion.

HOWEVER, you cannot assume that it's just a matter of letting nature take its course. Ask any animal breeder who has had to, uuh, "tease" a not-too-experienced stud and help with getting things reasonably on target. Instinct only goes so far.
There's also a certain amount of modeling that comes into play. If I remember correctly, Harry Harlow did some monkey studies in the 1950s and 1960s---infant monkeys at birth were exposed to dummy wire mothers with milk bottles. When these surrogate-raised infants reached adulthood and were bred, they had *absolutely no idea* how to handle and bond with their own infants, and even abused them.

There is one great difference between a Human Being and an animal - human being have the thinking power to choose but animals don't. They are programmed to eat, live, have sex at regular intervals. In one way they have a structured life - they do everything periodically and as per the nature rules and regulations other than human beings.

Smell is the key player for most of the Animals. When the animal organs grow, like human beings they too have puberty, periods etc,.but nature takes control of all the life cycle for animals. the male recognises the female by smelling the vagina or its body and makes a vague noise to create attraction. In animals, it is the straight opposite to human beings. Most of the females only try to attract male partners in animals because male are the most beautiful ones in birds & animal kingdom. for example, Peacock, male only has beautiful feathers.Lion, male only has hair around neck.Deer, male only has wonderful Horns. for mor details contact GOD AT HEAVEN.COM

It's basic primal instinct. Just as we tend to prevent our death at all costs. A species will act in the same manner. It's encoded in the most basic of brain patterns.

It is natural instinct. Like a mother develops natural instincts when she has a child and no one to tell her how to raise that child. It all just comes naturally.

It's maternal instinct. I think humans have it too, but it gets lost in the rehashing.
