Definitely The Stand. It is a great allegory about how people act when faced with apocalyptic events. I have read this book at least three times, once in one day (from dawn to late evening).
I started reading Stephen King in junior high (Carrie, I think). That was 30 years ago or so. Unfortunately, I don't hink his more recent books are as good as his earlier works but I still hold out hope and purchase each and every book.

I love his short story books best - any & all. But do you ever notice most of his books do not translate well to movies? I think it is because most of his books are so much about what is going on in the character's heads, not spoken or shown in a physical way. When they try to translate that into speech or action (for movies) it comes off clumsy. I was just thinking last night (when TNT had on "Signs" & then "Dreamcatcher"): M. Night Shyamalan & Stephen King ought to write a movie script together. King seems to crowd too much into his stories to work on film, but are great on the written page, while M.Night seems to run short of ideas, but makes beautifully crafted, 'make you jump' scary movies. Don't you think together they would come up with some great movies?

On Writing....
A memoir of sorts, written about his life as a writer and HOW to go about writing well. It's quite fascinating. I don't dig on his horror books but as a prolific writer he is amazing and a very interesting person. If you are a fan of his, or just a fan of writing, you would enjoy it a lot.

The stand was pretty good. They don't always translate well to the screen though.
