You can use regcleaner
http://www.worldstart.com/weekly-download/archives/reg-cleaner4.3.htm
not only to clean your registry, but also to see the programms that start together with windows. You can delete unwanted programms
here. You can look in your bios what the thresholds for the cpu temperature are. good luck!

Based on the description above I think there could be multiple reasons:

1) Your computer runs too hot and as the fan speed increasingly speeds up and makes mild noise, if yes read below if not move to point 2.

The primary reason for this is that your HDD is working hard to keepup with the data demands from the CPU and is not able to (this combined with page-in/pageout) due to multitude of programs running in the memory may make your computer run very hot internally (though you may not feel it on the surface) and this causes the CPU temperature to rise and there is a temperature limit in the CPU that shuts the notebook down when it crosses that threshhold. The Solution is to have the laptop cleaned internally as that might also be the reason for unreasonable heating. Also make sure that the air wents are not blocked and see if you can provide more space to the air wents by keeping a thick book below the laptop or put your laptop directly in front of cool air from AC or anything like that. You can also download a small program from www.downloads.com that would tell you the current CPU temperature. I also had the same problem and I solved it by changing my slow speed HDD to a higher RPM with faster data transfer HDD and also increased the RAM to 1GB from 512 MB.

2) Corrupt Driver:
It shuts down when you are using a specific program or a device which means that the device or the driver is the culprit. First, check if the device is working properly in the device Manager. If yes, then reinstall the driver for that device using the Device manager (you can reach device manager by right clicking "My computer" icon and selecting properties).

3) Generally cleaup.
Make sure you have run defrag so that your files are positioned in contiguous location and your HDD has an easier life and does not overheat, reduce the number of programs that start in the startup, Google suspicious looking, memory hogging, CPU hogging programs and un-install them if you don't need them. ALso un-install programs that you have not used in 6 months or more (if you have not used it in 6 months you probably don't need it) this would lighten a lot of burden on your computer, Also make sure that all the you also run Disk Cleaup and remove all the obsolete restore points. Not to mention that schedule virus scans, adware scans for everyday execution during idle pc time.

Hope this helps, if it still does not solve the problem see the local hardware repair person.

You mentioned that you are using a fan; however, I still think the problem is overheating. During booting, you can enter in to setup to see the temperatures of the CPU and motherboard but a better way is to install Lavalys Everest Home Edition. Everest is a small free program that takes an inventory of all the hardware components of your laptop and displays it. In addition, it can display the CPU and motherboard temperatures in real time. You can dowload Everest at http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Everest_Home/1086844970/1

Once you have the temperatures, go over to: http://www.technibble.com/what-is-my-computers-maximum-cpu-temperature/
The website has a chart on the maximum temperature limit for several CPU's. If the temperature of your CPU exceeds its limits then you might want to consider buying a new cooling system.

Sounds to me like you have a trojan horse virus. Some are literally undetecable!! I suggest taking it to a tech and let him fix it for you. you may need to erase everything and have it all reloaded. Or if this has been going on a very long time, it may be way to late. Like I said take it to a techy and get it looked at!! If you have that Virus all you personal information ahs been sold to other people, such as CC#'s and stuff like that.

If you do a complete reinstall, it will take care of software problem.
If it still continues , you have to take it to the manufacturers service station, for detecting any hardware problem.

You might be overheating...check your CPU fan because if it's not working you will overheat very quickly (the fan blowing on the back of it will not help).

There is probably something wrong with your operating system or hard drive. . .I would back up all files, and totally re load the operating system. . . if that doesn't work than something is wrong with the hard drive and you will need a new one. . .
