a very good question,i think maybe in a sick twisted kind of way when they say that,they are really hoping you dont duck so you will get hit and they can get a good laugh,i dont know but thats my analogy.Have a great weekend

We actually mean "look out" . comes from things that fall from above. . . I suppose.
Although I checked and they don't specifically list "heads up" this web site http://www.phrases.org.uk has an extensive list of typical english phrases and their meaning.
