Attached to your wireless router's administration page. You will need your router's owner's manual if you are not familiar with this process.
If you are going to be adding, removing or changing devices frequently the do the following:
1. Enable Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) on the router.
2. Establish a shared key for encryption. Use the longest key length you router allows. This key can only use the numbers 0 - 9 and the letters A to F. Do not use a common sequence (like 123.. or your phone number). Write this shared key down somewhere.
3. Reboot the router. Now only devices that 'know' the key can connect and your transmissions over the wireless will be encrypted.
4. On each device that you want to connect you will need to go into the wireless configuration and enter the shared key.
5. Any new devices that need access (permenant or temporary) will need to have the shared key entered.
If you don't change device often.. there's a better and more secure method if your router allows it. In most routers you can enter 'valid' MAC addresses. These are the unique identifiers of any wireless access card or wired network card. Do the following in this situation:
1) Turn on all the devices that you want to connect to your router and insure there is a connection.
2) Enter your router's configuration. You should be able to find a 'staus' pages that shows all connected devices. Insure all these devices belong to you and no one is 'mooching'. If you notice one that doesn't belong write down the MAC address.
3) Locate your routers MAC validation table. This is where you can enter only MAC addresses that are valid for your network.
4) Enter all MAC addresses in this table. Some routers will display all addresses and allow you to 'selectively enable/disable' them. Watch for those addresses from the 'moochers', if any so you can either disable or remove them from the table.
5) In your router configuration there is an option to enable or disable the MAC address table. Enable this option.
6) Reboot your router.
This should do it. Oh.. don't forget to change the admin user id and password on your router. This should have already been done.. but thought I would remind you in case it hasn't been done. Oh.. if you want to mess with the moochers you can rename your router device name to something like "KeepOut" or "xxxxFamily" where xxxx is your family name. Then when they go searching for your wireless to mooch again.. they see that name instead of the one they were used to. You can other more nasty names but then you might be inviting someone to try to 'hack' their way in by pissing them off.
Good luck and I hope this helps.

well u didnt say what make and model of router u have.
so this is sort of a generic setup.
open up internet explroer
goto address bar type in ip of router eg 192.168.0.1
goto the section that says security or wep key etc
either a good passphrase with numbers and letters eg something only u would know eg mix dob with a name eg fr12ed95
this makes it very hard to break.
then u apply this, goto each machine and enter that same passphrase, and that will lock your neibourgh out of the connection.
there is other ways to make it more advanced lockout, so only your machines can get access this is called adding the mac address of wifi cards to the router, u would need to read the manual on this 1.
also make sure that the password on the router is good like the passphrase i suggsted.

Have the security encryption on your router.
To do this you can access the router through your computer and select the level of encryption (64 bit or 128 bit) and from them whoever knows the key can alone use your wireless.
The other option would be to call the customer service of the router and ask them about security and they will walk you through the process.

first element first, on the back or bottom of your router, there should be an IP cope with or URL, a default username and password. Log into the URL with that information, once you've replaced the password, use the as a lot as date password you chosen. you want to turn on between properly the following safe practices ideas less than the instantaneous section: WEP WPA-PSK [TKIP] WPA2-PSK [AES] WPA-PSK [TKIP] + WPA2-PSK [AES] you'll favor to operate a Passphrase and any gadget attempting to connect will favor the Passphrase. There are different steps you are able to take, do not broadcast your SSID, this kind your instantaneous signal will be hidden. you are able to also restriction get properly of entry to to human being contraptions. i'm hoping this helps you.

Secure your LAN by enforcing wireless firewall on the routers, modems, blah, blah plus other devices that contribute to network. If possible create a password on each modem, routers and firewalls.

Talk to your Internet service provider. They should have a help line you can call. They will talk you through the process of putting a password on your signal and making it secure.

It is illegal, for anyone to use your internet connection. I read in the paper, yesterday, where some guy was caught using someone else's wireless connection, and the judge sentenced him to 2 years in jail, and $2,000 fine. He suspended the jail term, but was required to pay the fine..Call the police, and report them..

You'll need to tell me your make of the router for specific answers. But, basically, you need to enable encryption for your wireless router. To do that, I recommend you using WEP encryption.
You could also use MAC adress filtering, but then again I need to know the make of your router. Please post the brand name and model number of your router in the additional details and i'll reply again.

You need to encrypt your network, which is very simple. On your router if there is a manual it will explain it very easy. You can also hide you network so no one will know you have one. You should always have an encrypted network.
