This is another question based off a previous question I had asked. I asked why women who are black are lumped into the "angry black woman" category. I did not say anything about snapping fingers and acting ghetto. I simply said I voiced my opinion on things I dont like. Some of the people who answered just assumed that I acted ghetto, screamed and yelled, and snapped my fingers. I DON'T DO THIS! Doesn't everyone complain about things they hate? And why does race have to be part of this at all?

Maybe it's because black women have a tendency to "wear their emotions on their sleeve." People have a misconception of african-american women, thinking that's what they're all about(snapping fingers and rolling eyes). But don't believe the hype. There are a lot of WHITE women I've seen doing the same thing. So it's not really about race, but how different females react to different situations. For example, let's just say a man disrespects a female, in general. People would be quite surprised to find that a majority of black women would retaliate in a sophisticated way: Either ignoring them or making a comeback that is so mature and realistic that it stupifies the ignorant man. However, there are white women that would just start cussing and raving as much as a black woman does. On the other hand, so many of us as black women portray ourselves as being that way, thinking that by acting "ghetto", it's suppose to communicate a no-nonsense attitude. That it would be a mistake to come at us incorrect. So u can't really blame some people . Because what u see is what u get. If all a person ever sees is black women acting hood, then 9 out of 10 the perception is going to be that all women of color are going to be in the "angry black woman" category. Just be who u are. If u know u don't act like that, don't worry yourself. Prove them wrong by not becoming a STATISTIC!

You are probably referring to the answer that I gave. I just did it for laughs. Honestly. Except for the person that said you snap your fingers. Now that would be a little exaggerated.

But for real, when a black woman is being assertive, I don't get the ABW idea, unless I'm thinking literally. But that stereotype never registers in my head.

An Angry Black Woman would be the one that's chasing her man down with a knife in her hand because she caught him cheating. Kind of like the Vanessa Williams scene on the movie Soul Food.

Because, unfortunately people think in stereotypes and assume that if a black woman gets angry they are going to automatically start acting ghetto. They think the same way about black men too. It's all silly.

You may not believe this, but when I read your phrase "angry Black woman" I immediately thought of someone I'd want to be. (Keep reading) There is something about women that is strong, in that women since the beginning of time have been the ones to bear the children, raise the children, take care of the family, and sometimes be treated unjustly in society. We have endured. We have overcome a lot, and we have earned our right to tell it like it is. Put that together with the history behind being Black, and you have someone who is pretty darn powerful. To me, an angry Black woman is someone who stands up for what is right in the face of adversity, and has no second thoughts about telling it like it really is- when someone needs to hear the truth. If she is living her life right, I will listen to her observations all day long.

I always thought the term "angry black woman/man" referred to one who was outraged over social injustices... I don't associate it with the ghetto... more like higher education. I'm white and I get pissed about social-political-whateverandeverything-inequalities.. but for some reason I'm not called an "angry white woman". I just think it's another sign of our culture's lack of equality.... There are far more people out there who claim they are not racist and then turn around and scream about "acting ghetto" than there are who can sit and really think about the meaning behind the words they're speaking...

It is simply a stereotype, BUT if you had mentioned your race in addition to mentioning your sex, in a manner of speaking, you did "add fuel to the fire" by mentioning it. I don't consider my race when speaking on points that make me angry unless it actually has some relevance to the topic. If I said something about being an "angry white guy" there are those who will focus on the fact that I am white, regardless of what the problem actually is.

I have found that for the most part people who are black(in your case) Hispanic, Asian, etc. tend to assume that others are being racially motivated. Even when people aren't. I did not see and do not plan to look at the answers from your previous question. But from my own experience the most racially motivated people are the ones who claim that they are being discriminated against because of their race.

Unfortunately, it's ALL about stereotypes. Black stereotypes, white stereotypes. Latino stereotypes. If there's a bad example of someone of a specific race or ethnic group behaving a certain way, that's what sticks in some people's minds. I'm don't agree with it, but that's the way it is for many people.

it's just a steriotype fed by movies and television: black women get anrgy and the next sentence you hear includes the word "ghetto" so people see this and say the same whenever a black woman gets a little agrivated.

monkey see monkey do.
so dont worry about it, if someone says that to you, it's just because they cant form their own opinions and turn to the tv for guidance

Exactly. Exactly. Exactly. I was mad from your previous post when someone brought up the fact that you were probably snapping your fingers and getting loud (more black stereotypes). It's so frustrating. Just continue to state your mind. Let other folks fall into place where they are...the realm of ignorance.
