In the current socio-political climate, American public support would not be in favor of a homosexual President. This is not to say that Americans will never support a homosexual President, but it would be very unlikely at the current time.

If you examine the approval ratings for President Bush, one can see that only around 25%-30% of the country is likely to unilaterally support a President. In the event of a sitting President "coming out", one can assume that approval numbers would drop at least to those levels. It also could be expected that many of the people who fall in that 25%-30% range would no longer be the supporters that they would have been previously, either because of their moral/ethical beliefs regarding homosexuality, or because of feelings of betrayal because this hypothetical President would have lied in order to get into office.

To be honest, the real issue here is whether a President who was or had been actively homosexual could keep that a secret during a Presidential campaign. Given the intensive screening that these candidates go through from media outlets and opposition research by other campaigns, it is difficult to imagine that something so politically damaging could really stay a secret long enough to allow for this increasingly hypothetical person to be elected President.

If you're interested in learning more about these issues, a good case study for this is that of former New Jersey Governor Jim McGreevey, who resigned after admitting to an extra-marital affair with a male staffer. It is worth noting that McGreevey had other major issues within his administration at the time of his resignation, but he still provides a decent example of how this situation might play out.

Oh this would be too much for American the closed minded america. Perhaps in the future, but no any time soon. People are too hateful for this. They are not even ready for a female vice president or to be kind to any nice person. There has never been a single president. No this cannot happen yet. Sorry I am not anti gay, but we need a real neutral person. They slam on people for anything.

I am not sure if America as a nation will support a gay president. Personally I don't understand why people are so against homosexuality. It's not like people choose to be gay and if the president of the U.S. is gay then so be it...it doesn't change who they are on the inside.

Due to this country's frowning down upon gays outlook, that will never happen. The only way for us to end up with a gay President is if he doesn't admit it until he is in his presidency. He can't be impeached unless he's done something terrible, admitting your gay will upset the country, but its not enough to impeach.

No, a president cannot be impeached for being gay unless he actually lied about it under oath (perjury).

And most Americans apparently won't accept a gay father, so the odds are not good.

To be honest with you idont have a problem with gays or lesbians. I myself am straight but i do have several friends that of different lifestyles but honestly the majority of the united states will not upport a gay president. I would think that it would be a dont ask dont tell type of situation. To be honest i think a gay president would be more passionate towards the things that are going on and towards america's needs.

I think America would elect a Black president before they ever elected a gay one. I think it might be possible in a few decades, the world needs to evolve a little more, the human mentality needs to become more accepting, as of right now too many people are "shocked" by homosexuality.

I would have absolutely no problem with having a gay President. That's not an issue he or she would be running on. And his or her sexual preference has no bearing on any of our lives. I imagine a gay president would likely be a Democrat or an Independent, which is great by me. (Do gay republicans even exist? :-) ) LOL! As long as said person was qualified to lead our nation, I'd be 100% behind them!
