Hmm nature against the law...it seems the law is more against nature....but both scenarios are unnatural to me...as far as I'm concerned, alcohol wreaks much more havoc upon our society---drunk driving, people who get violent and abusive from alcohol, etc...pot makes people mellow and peaceable, if you ask me...
Maybe they could issue permits to smoke it? That would address not being able to tax it, if people could grow it themselves...it would be like gun ownership..
Anyway, anymore in CA, it's not really enforced here, and if someone gets caught with it (at least the first time)...it's really no more hassle than a speeding ticket...I think they just use it (the laws prohibiting it) against the people they want for other reasons...
But seriously, people need to wake up: the prison problem---overcrowding, needing to build more at such a high cost, violent criminals being paroled and their recidivism rate---all of those ills could be greatly eased if non-violent drug offenders in prison for a pot conviction were released! And never jailed in the first place!! When we're spending so much more money on prisons than higher education, now that to me is a crime!

I smoked a lot of weed for a long time, and although i once enjoyed it, I ended up quite paranoid etc (over indulgence). I have known people to suffer permanent phsycosis from years of smoking, and even schizophrenia. People who are over sensitive to narcotics can have the actual chemical balance in their brain permanently altered by it (for the worse). If i was given the chance i would go back and never have touched it. So i reckon if the laws keep more people from trying it as kids then that's a good thing. Some people will enjoy it and never have ill effects, but the risks far out weigh the temporary enjoyment of it.

Because it causes conciousness-altering effects, and this was deemed unacceptable and a danger to the health of the population at some point in the past, and therefore made illegal.

These decisions aren't necessarily consistent are sensible, as a recent study on the physiological effects of intoxicants shows.

I totally agree sod this bloody nannying and just let people consume at will. All they need to do is have a health warning on such plants. But on the same thread if the consumers find they have problems (and inevitably they will if one has over indulged) then leave them to get out of their own mess. They would have known of the risks in the first place!

It's not illegal due to religion. It's because of the possible health effects that it has. The government can't be seen to allow something to be done if it's gonna kil a whole load of people. Hence the crack down on smoking, and then after that probably alcohol. Then perhaps sport, cos you could sprain an ankle doin that...

So do opium, cocaine, belladonna, deadly nightshade...many plants which are beneficial when properly administered are poison when abused. If you don't believe me just go out and munch some rhubarb leaves!
Laws are made to protect people from themselves. There are so many natural highs in life (love, laughter, kindness)--why smoke em!

stunning (wing) questioning is approximately stunning Knickers. Yellow journalism, racism against Mexicans, DuPont making synthetic ingredients that rival hemp, even tobacco businesses lobbied to restrict pot using fact it became a competitor to tobacco. seems various each and every physique is unaware of its well being and psychological reward too.

I think you have all missed the point. Why are politicians legal? They are supposedly natural, but don't give you the feel good factor, so I reckon if you could have stopped then well done Cj,

I know it is difficult to understand, but on the other hand maybe it is the forbidden fruit from the devil.
I have smoked it for about 25 years, and my husband too. We started the morning off with a joint and kept on all day long, but it had started to affect our health. So last October we decided to give up smoking, both it and cigarettes and so far are doing well, and I must admit that i am far healthier now than I was. I know it feels good but not all that is shinny is gold, if you see what i mean!

That's like saying having a knife is illegal! If you intend cutting your food (or even a carpet, whatever), with it is not illegal - it is your intention of what you are going to use it for.
It is not the plant that is illegal and it is not growing it that is illegal. What is illegal is what you intend to do with it when you have grown it that could be illegal - and I suspect that what you would intend to do with it would be illegal. So, the reason that it is illegal is because you intend to use it for the wrong purpose.
