The heavy duty pros usually play a chromatic. But of course many blues players simply switch up between diatonics. Some blues guys use chromatic: Paul Butterfield was amazing in this regard.

But one of the most amazing harmonica players I ever met was a cat named Bill Dice. His thing was diatonic... now usually, as you know, you play the harp located a fourth above the key... A for E, for example. This gives all the natural blue notes... but Bill's thing was wilder than that:
he could play almost any key on any harp, within reason. He would use a B, even a C harp in A, for example, finessing the notes by slurring. The result was that his melodic lines were way different than any other blues player I ever heard.
