How would your current Employer know where you are looking? If your new potential employer contacted your current employer, that is called getting a reference, BUT your current employer is very restricted by law as to what they can say.

why would a current or past employer be calling a potential employer? Check with your local EEOC.

It's called checking your work history. Each states has rules concerning this.

Of course they can. They can "contact" anyone they want to. Of course they may not slander you, but they may "contact" them for any reason.
