I'm just wondering if this is part of everyone's life, or if some have managed to avoid it.

Just to a wake. Never a funeral. I have lost close family members but I was always in another country when the funerals took place. I can't imagine what it must be like and my heart goes out to those who have to attend.

I went to my first funeral around 10 years old. Awful. More awful, though, was my dad's funeral last year. Now I will never go to another funeral again, unless it is my mother, husband or myself. Before that, I did try to avoid them by going only to the wake.

Lots of funerals. While I was in school, one summer I was a ball bearer for hire. When someone died and not enough family and friends could attend the funeral for whatever reason, the funeral home would hire me to be a ball bearer.

I only recently went to a funeral. One of a very good friend. It is an emotional proceeding, and many people, if they choose to, should avoid it.

I've never been to one. When my husband's (he was just my boyfriend at the time) grandmother died, I went to her memorial service, but she was buried later.
