Ya... I know, its by SMELL. But, how do they travel so fast within a few minutes & reach the spot whereever sweet is found. Otherwise, they r never found near by, but once they have sweet smell.... Kill me !!

I think initially the first ant discovers the food source by hunting for it but then upon finding something it may release a chemical for others to smell and then returns to the nest and the message is relayed to others and soon there is a whole mess of them marching to the source back and forth.

sad to say... it is still the SMELL that guides the other ants to food (say sugar) that are found.

if 1 ant found a great amount of food, he will create a TRAIL of pheromone, from the food source to the location of their colony.

and the ants colony will follow that trail---just like the hansel and gretel story---it's like running in a clear road, because they are guided by SMELL.

They use their mobiles to call other ants.
