I have been with my boyfriend for almost a year and he has always had a loud cough. He coughs for about 10 minutes and then he's fine for a while. He tends to sniff very sharply and I think this causes the flem to go down the back of his throat which then makes him cough, and he brings the flem up again. I saw a home movie of him about 10 years ago and he had it then. He's reluctant to go to the doctor as he thinks he wont be able to help and will only give him medicine he doesn't need.
Its very loud, and I hate listening to him cough all the time.

I agree with Patricia. He really needs to get it checked out. Could be something as simple as post-nasal drip that can be helped with allergy medications. Does he smoke? That can definitely do it. Could be from a deviated septum that could also be fixed. Does sound like it is coming from his sinuses draining.

If it's been going on for over 10 years he REALLY needs medical help.

PS. He could be afraid to have it checked out. I'm sure he knows it's not normal to have a cough for over 10 years. Talk to him gently about it and offer to go with him to the doctor's. He's a guy and probably like most guys would rather die than admit that they are afraid.

Sounds like a post nasal drip due to allergies. Has he tried an antihistamine? This may work. He should cowboy up and go to a doctor for a real diagnosis.

hi,your friend may be having allergic rhinitis, since it causes sneezing and coughing,he should stop smoking if he is smoker and try to discover what causes him to sneeze and avoid it ,it could be a perfume, a plant or like,or if
failed he should consult a specialist in allergy.
