George Washington as he was our first
He wanted to be called simply Mr. President because he was a humble man
He's the only president elected unanimously by the electoral college
He established the two-terms limit now in place
He was a great military man who really fought for our nations freedom.
He was a great leader
Lincoln comes in second on my list. The greatest American I think was possibly Benjamin Franklin.

FDR definitely wasn't because he locked up tens of thousands of american citizens for "national security" purposes in violation of their constitutional rights, funny how everybody forgets that.
My vote goes to Reagan. We can argue about economics all day, but nobody can deny that he united the country in a way that many former and subsequent presidents have failed to do. He made people feel good about being Americans again.

FDR because he moved America away from the prevailing social darwinism that was practiced in America up until his election. He shaped us into a more collective society where we were not on our own to sink or swim.
That's why Conservatives dislike him so much. Social Darwinism is coming back into being the ruling social paradigm. Bush is doing all he can to destroy the FDR legacy with his "ownership society" schemes.

I think FDR or Lincoln. That sounds like a hack answer, but those are the names that come to mind.

Abe Lincoln got us through incredibly tough times. Was very unpopular at his time.
