I have read Gilbert Highet's Diogenes and Alexander. He concluded that
"He knew that of all men then alive in the world only Alexander the
conqueror and Diogenes the beggar were FREE".
I feel a bit confused why they were the only free men in the world then? How do you understand?

Hello dear!
Well, in that time, all the Greek city states were either under the Macedonia rule or the Persian rule! The Macedonians and thus all Greeks had a king, Alexandre. From all of the Greek citizens, one, Diogenes left his property and belongings and was philosophizing! He was so strong and dynamic that even Alexandre took a trip to meet with Diogenes! While their discussion, the only free was Diogenes! This since Diogenes was spiritually, mentally, philosophically stronger than the young king!
What gives us freedom is not the armies, nor money and property but wisdom!

Probably because they did pretty much what they wanted too. Just a guess.
