B is liquid, grease
C is electrical
The larger the number, the larger a fire it can handle. The best all round extinguisher would be labelled ABC.

Fires are classified as A,B, and C. B is for combustible liquids. The 1 has to do with weight of the extinguisher, 1 being smaller than 11. A is for ordinary combustibles and C is for electrical fires. On boats the concern is for the combustible fuels.

Class B Extinguishers should be used on fires involving flammable liquids, such as grease, gasoline, oil, etc. The numerical rating for this class of fire extinguisher states the approximate number of square feet of a flammable liquid fire that a non-expert person can expect to extinguish.
