Nathan is correct, make sure you're downloading Mac files and not Windows files. A Mac will simply ignore a Window file.

Most Mac downloads will be in either the .sit, .zip, or .dmg format.

Stuffit Expander is needed to UnStuff .sit files. It's here and it's FREE: http://www.stuffit.com/mac/index.html You only need to pay for Stuffit Deluxe if you plan to compress your own files. CHances are you won't need it, just the free Stuffit Expander.

.zip files and .dmg files can be opened by OS X itself.

I'm not going to give you step by step instructions, but make sure you have Stuffit Expander installed. Also, make sure its a valid file, and made for the Mac platform. If it ends in .exe, then it's a windows program, and it won't work.
