Regardless of color, women are responded to negatively when we get angry, voice our discontent, try to make changes or be assertive. If you're not an angry black woman, you're a bi*ch, a ball breaker, 'having that time of the month', and a million other negative stereotypes. It's a way men use to try to negate what we're saying, to demean us, to take away our power and place us in a subservient position. Women who buy into it are simply participating in their own degradation. Just keep being assertive! Women are rising to the top in most professions, getting more advanced and professional degrees, and it's only a matter of time before the female style of doing business becomes the norm.

I think it all depends on how you voice your opinion. Do you do it calmly and logically while talking with a group of coworkers, or are you loud and boisterous so much so that half the office hears it, whether they want to or not? Do you but in on conversations and voice your opinion when it's not wanted, or are you asked for it? Any number of things could contribute you being labeled the angry black woman. It all depends on how you handle yourself. If you do it tactfully and when warranted, you're being stereotyped. If you're the type of person who's got an opinion on every little thing out there and aren't afraid to tell anyone within 50 feet, most people don't like people like that. It's incredibly annoying and becomes very tiresome after a while.
There's a huge difference between being assertive and being annoying.

Well, I voice my opinion too. I'll be glad to stand next to you as "the angry white woman." Some people just have a problem with assertive woman and/or minorities. Being both means you have two strikes already against you in some people's eyes.

Maybe its the way that you voice your opinion.. Giving your constant opinion can make you the office pain in the a rse. Think about it.. are you just spouting on about what you don't like all the time or are you calmly offering a better suggestion? If you are not doing the latter then you probably are an angry woman, black, white or otherwise.

A previous poster said something about not snapping fingers or raising your voice...but, you didn't say that you did! This is the VERY core underlying problem that you are talking about.
Sociologists study the order in which people are "named/identified". Like, housewife, mother, nurse, white, nice. More often when it comes to Blacks...Negative remarks, race, or sex, lead the naming, "Angry, black, woman." It's irritating. Without a full crash course on diversity sensitivity/management and sociology - which some people do get at their jobs - the ignorance generally just continues. Grrrr....

You are not the "angry black woman" nor should you be put in that category. Angry people are people, regardless of color, are always upset about something and vent their anger out-a lot!
You just happened to say what is on your mind. Where ever you work at, I assume that when someone REALLY angry tells them off, I do not feel they would know how to handle that person.
You can be as assertive as you want; it is your co-workers who seems they can't handle it!

Women aren't taken seriously. And SOME white people think black people whine about racism. However anyone who has spent time on this site knows racism is alive and well. So there you have it from an angry black woman!

You have really lost it if you think ANY woman, be they white, black, pink, or green, will accept anyone calling them by that name. Go take a nap and get that attitude right. Hey Jay, I thought it was cyanide that smelled like bitter almonds. And not everyone has the ability to discern this.

well, perhaps its the way you say it... There is nothing worse than a black woman's tongue lashing or rant... just the way you girls throw it out there. Try expressing your opinions in a less hostile or less assertive way. not saying to be a submissive little girl, but dont raise voice, snap fingers, etc... that stuff is best left outside the office
