"I'm sorry for your loss" works very well. It's what a lot of people say at funerals to the family.

honestly there really isn't anything you can say. When I lost my hubby 4 months ago, I hated hearing if u need anything call, from insincere people. Just simply say I am sorry for your loss, and/or I am thinking of you and your family.

Just what you said....I am sorry to hear of your loss. I think I'd also want to say that I'll be here if they need me and want to talk or need company.

Just that.
"I am very sorry for your loss, I am here if you need me"..
They may hear it alot, but it still helps, and tells them how you feel.

Speaking from experience , there is absolutely nothing you can say to make them feel better , just let them know you are always there if they ever need anything or just to talk.

Ask if there is anything you can do for them and then remind them that you are there for them anytime.
