I believe it refers to farmers who are sunburned on the back of the neck from working in the fields

The redneck is caused by sunburn when working outside. As this phenominon affects most farmers, (and is the leading cause of ERD) and is also associated with being ignorant or dimwitted as those with some higher education became no necks the others became red necks. So display your white red neck with the pride of the work that is America.

The word redneck was first cited in Scotland.

The popular etymology says that the term derives from such individuals having a red neck caused by working outdoors in the sunlight over the course of their lifetime.

Another popular theory stems from the use of red bandanas tied around the neck to signify union affiliation during the violent clashes between United Mine Workers and owners between 1910 and 1920.

Today usage of the term "redneck" differs from hick and hillbilly, because rednecks reject or resist assimilation to the dominant culture, while hicks and Hillbillies are isolated from the dominant culture.

There are various other theories about the origin of the term. Many of them are discussed at the wikipedia link.

I hope this information helps.

oh ya of course blame the farmers and country boys for this term. don't even think about the indians where it actually came from. we called them red skins as well as red necks. it was due to the sunburn and all that, but over time it got switched to farmers and country people that worked mostly outside.

Don't know. But I think it means a southern otherwise pale person with a red neck from where the sun burned it.
