I am on oxygen 24/7 since june2000. Are you asking what is the criteria NEEDED to QUALIFY for oxygen so MEDICARE pays for it? If so, your doctor should do some testing, both blood work and he or she can send a nurse to your home and hook you up to a halter monitor which will measure your saturated oxygen level. You just jot down activities and make note of the time.

They want an idea of your activities and what happends to your oxygen during that activity, If your oxygen level stays around 88% and below, you qualify for supplemental oxygen, Your doctor will set you up with everything you need. You may still qualify for oxygen if it's higher than 88% but you have congested heart failure, or pulmonary problems. I have both.

When they hooked up the machine it was 88% I was sitting. She wanted me to walk around my kitchen and back to my chair to see how sensitive the machine was or checking it for acuracy. After taking only 4 to 5 steps I felt as if I was going to faint. The nurse helped me back to my chair immediately. During those few steps my oxygen plummetted to 44%. I am under hospice care and I am still short of breath with oxygen.

Medicare pays for everything related to my oxygen and it pays for a nebulizing machine and most medications. I provided a link that has Medicare rules about oxygen and other things they pay for and what the criteria is for eligibility. You can go to www.ssa.gov and follow the links to the site you need. If you are already on Medicare, you're in luck. It's just a pain in the butt waiting to be qualified disabled.

I hope you're breathing easier soon!
