It's too bad that so many people who don't have a clue what anime is answered this question. It isn't "just cartoons" and it certainly isn't "realistic human movement." If you've ever watched an anime animation you'd notice that the movements are typically NOT smooth and there is little to no movement in some scenes except for some lipsync. The reason why it's popular depends on who you're asking. Some people might like it because the animations aren't made specifically for kids but for more mature audiences. This doesn't make it PORN! If you saw a kissing scene in a Hollywood film you wouldn't call it porn. Just because the characters in anime experience emotions and situations that humans experience doesn't make it porn.
I personally like it because it is a more open type of storytelling that doesn't require a happy ending or jokes. Kids love anime because the stories don't talk down to them. They require more engagement in the storyline and for some kids who like to get to know characters deeper than the jokes they tell, it suits them. And a lot of the popular anime shows have a huge cast of characters that allow them to be collectible and kids love anything they can collect and play with.

Anime is an important part of Japanese culture and can take the form of movies / "cartoons". (Manga is more strictly related to comic books.) Although the protagonists do tend to have child-like features and large eyes, it is a real shame that it has become associated with porn in the West. Yes, there are pornographic elements (hentai, etc) but this is not the sum total of anime.
Anime can deal with important issues such as the ecology and technology that can be considered "deep". Ghost in the Shell discusses philosophical issues related to what it means to be human and Princess Mononoke depicts the struggle between human development and its impact on the environment - as does Pom Poko.
Graveyard of the Fireflies describes life in Japan after the atomic bomb was dropped, and is one of the saddest films I have ever seen. My toddler loves My Neighbour Tortoro and Spirited Away - yes we are big Ghibli fans.
I would read round Japanese culture using the wikipedia link as a beginning to place anime. You will find that even the hentai has historical and cultural contexts, and that for every hentai there are spirited female protagonists.

Anime, is like a special kind of cartoon. The characters are very well drawn, with a few alterations to the features like the big eyes. The characters also move and speak like humans their movements are smooth. One reason so many people love anime is because it usually deals with certain characters having special powers or maybe it's just an exciting story line. Also, I think many people find that it is cool to read in the wrong direction, because when you read anime u read from right to left. Anyway, I hope this helps

Anime is a popular form of art in Japan and is starting to gain great popularity here in the U.S.. Japanese animation is considered a much respected and serious form of artistic expression much akin to theater and big budget filmaking in America. The origins of anime, according to many anime sources, are actually derived from western influences of the early 30's and 40's; the old Betty Boop(hence the big eyes) serials were wildly popular in Japan during those times as Japan made it's transformation from it's historical feudal era into a more westernized society. As the U.S. began to relegate these old cel animations to the status of 'nostalgia', the Japanese continued to elevate the art form until it evolved to it's current form today. More than just 'cartoons', Anime has many subgenres ranging from Comedy to Science Fiction, Horror to Action, Suspese Thrillers to Hard Core Adult films---it is truly an art that reflects every facet of our society...

anime is Japanese animation and it's popular since people like my watch it and enjoy ever minute because I know that it isn't no bulls*** cartoon that has an idiotic plot and characters like other cartoons I know that it's a anime story trying to sent me a message about life and how to take it head on and that it doesn't mean you have to be serious all along the way as your heading for your task and that you can smile while confronting it with friends or without.

Outside Japan, the term most popularly refers to the medium of animation originating in Japan, with distinctive character and background aesthetics that visually set it apart from other forms of animation (e.g. Walt Disney films, Warner Bros. short cartoons). Within Japan, the term anime is used to refer to all forms of animation from around the world. While some anime is entirely hand-drawn, computer assisted animation techniques are, in recent years, quite common. Storylines are typically fictional; examples of anime representing most major genres of fiction exist. Anime is broadcast on television, distributed on media such as DVD and VHS, or included in computer and video games. Anime is often influenced by Japanese comics known as manga. Some anime storylines have been adapted into live action films and television series.

Anime or japanimation as some would call it is simply put cartoons from Japan. They are so popular because they have no limits, no restrictions, willing to push the envelope, and put deep storylines. That's what I know about anime.
