Tough question, but I think Strats are more versatile, with 5+ combinations of pickup selections (Mine has 7 combinations!) Strat's are lighter and more contoured (rounded edges instead of corners) so I think they're more comfortable to play. (My opinion)

If you break a Les Paul's neck, you're in for a bigger repair because the neck is glued-into the body for better sound transfer. Strat's have bolt-on necks, but some people think a bolt-on doesn't help the sound of the guitar too much. I say, it's supposed to sound that way.

Both hold their value, both are respected guitars.

Les Paul all the way. While the Strat is good Gibsons are Great. Which is why you pay more. My husband has a Strat and he loves it but if it was up to him and not his checkbook he would own the Les Paul.
BUT at the same time your friend may just prefer one to the other. So its all about personal preference. Majority just prefers Les Paul.

To know the difference, you have to play them.
the Les Paul is more of classic rock guitar sound.
the Strat is more of a bluesy sound.
Personally I like the Strat, it has more body, and less of a crisp sound.

Personally, I prefer the Fender. I like the sound more. I think the Gibson has a more 80s hair band sound. But that's just me.
