Because lamp shades redirect most of the light. If you haven't noticed, most can turn and swivel :D

Not to mention, bare bulbs aren't exactly the prettiest decor.

That way you don't look directly at the bulb, and see white blotches for the next 1/2 hour!

1, It diffuses the harsh light to make more pleasing
2. the shade can add to the 'decor' of the room
3. makes a nice party hat for the drunken guests.....

Before there were soft lightbulbs it would hurt your eyesight to
look @ a naked bulb. Today, it's a fashion statement. It's a choice.
