Popular SNS sites in Japan:

Yahoo! JAPAN Days: http://days.yahoo.co.jp
GREE: http://gree.jp
Otaba: http://otaba.jp
Mixi is by far the most popular, but Yahoo! JAPAN's Days has a nice set of features and should catch up fast. Gree has some interesting features, but not everything seems to work and the interface is slightly confusing. Otaba...sorry, it doesn't look like an SNS that I am very interested in getting into. ;-)

Yahoo Japan has started it recently

(you need either invitation from a current member or
to be a paid Yahoo Japan memeber)
but mixi is still dominating the SNS in Japan
its communities are very scarce
