What alcohol does in the brain
A study that examined 13 brain areas (frontal lobe, parietal lobe, temporal lobe, occipital lobe, basal ganglia, thalamus, limbic system, midbrain, cerebellum, insular, anterior cingulated gyrus, posterior cingulated gyrus, and the paracentral) during intoxication showed decreased absolute metabolism for all 13 areas. The occipital lobe (vision), cerebellum (balance, attention, movement), and temporal lobe (hearing), showed the greatest affect. Although all areas showed metabolic decreases, just knowing that these three areas showed the most decrease explains why intoxicated people show the typical “drunk” signs

I believe that the intoxicating effects of ethanol can be reversed by a certain GABA antagonist which would suggest that it is exerting this effect by acting as a GABA receptor agonist in varrious parts of the brain.

It was also thought at one time that ethanol may have some membrane stabilizing effects.
