How can we as a people decide where we need to go if we don't look at where we've been. If we ignore history we will repeat it because we don't know about the bad things that happened to prevent them from happening again. Take Hitler for example. The world did not see the potential threat that Hitler posed. He began a campaign to take over the world and by the time anybody did anything about it he had most of Europe under his heel. Now we know what to look for should someone like Hitler ever appear again. History is important so look at it as a learning experience that can aid you in the future.
Have a great day!!!

You have to study history to get a perspective on where we came from, which has a direct bearing on where we are today and where our society may be heading in the future. History not only helps you understand who you are, but also helps you understand others, and why we do the things that we do. With a proper historical perspective, you are less easily manipulated, and can better plan for your future. You can put the world around you in context, which makes the world much more interesting and understandable.

Well, I am an old History minor graduate. History is essential to understanding ourselves today. It is also intriguing. But the sad fact is that many folks do not learn from history. Generations die and new ones repeat the same mistakes. For example, the U.S. should have learned from conflicts such as Korea and Vietnam but...

History is a lesson to society as a whole. As a society we can learn from our mistakes just like lessons learned in everyday life. Thats why I think it is very important to have historians that are unbiased and record the truth. All governments have dirty secrets they don't want recorded but they must be for the future generations to learn.

There is much to be learned from history in living today. Mistakes that were made do not need to be repeated, good things can be copied. Unfortunately, no one is paying attention!

History puts the present in context. One has to only read many of the questions and answers here to see why a lack of historical knowledge leads to a lack of understanding of current issues.

SO we don't repeat our mistakes...ofcourse, modern history books leave out George Washington, and Christian themes and values, so maybe there is not point. Soon, the PC will be sayin' George washington was a black lesbian. It makes me sick, but the truth is, the Public schools in this country don't teach real history.

So you will understand the culture and the country you are a part of. A lot had to happen for you to be here, there are a lot of legal and political values that people struggled to establish, its been a struggle for over a thousand years so if you appreciate how hard its been to establish freedom we enjoy today hopefully you will value it and treasure it and want to protect it.
