A five tool player is one who possess talent in the following five areas at an exceptional level. Hitting for average, hitting for power, speed, arm strength, fielding.
An old school example would be Willie Mays....or Ken Griffey Jr. in his prime. The best example among today's players was Bobby abreu....but his power slump this year calls in question that fifth tool.

Barry Bonds is no longer a 5 tool player, as he cannot run well, which takes away from fielding as well. Currently, the top 5 tool players in the big leagues are:
Carlos Beltran
Alfonso Soriano (borderline with fielding)
Derek Jeter (power is down, but still considered)
Alex Rodriguez
Vernon Wells
Torri Hunter
Vlad Guererro
Ichiro (he could hit for power if he chose to)
Albert Pujols (very close...not quite 5 tool speed, but close)
Miguel Tejada

A 5 tool player is someone like Carlos Beltran. Beltran hits a lot of HR's, has a decent average, steals bases, plays great in the field and runs the bases. Its basically someone that can be above average in all aspects of the game.
Guys like Pujols, Howard and Ortiz are like 4 tool players because they cant run.

Carlos Beltran! He can hit for average, hit for power, can cover the field, can throw you out, and can steal bases. Hence a five tool player
