Easy one - Creep Show. Came out back in the 80's, I believe. Classic footage, a must see! I saw it the first night it came out. The whole audience would scream at once, and then laugh at themselves!

There are a few, it depends on how willing you are to ignore cheesy effects due to era. The original Dracula is surprisingly scary, with Bela Lugosi. The Shining and Psycho are both superb (I saw them mentioned in other answers) but a really freaky, and different one?

But my answer is The Bad Seed. It's from 1956, B&W (like all the best horror should be!) and about a cute little girl in pigtails who murders compulsively. Fun, right?

If you hate old movies though, the only thing I really liked recently was the original Japanese Ring (Ringu, I think.) It's much smarter, scarier, and better made than the dumbed-down american one, though it is subtitled.

Communion with Christopher Walken....Signs (the build up and the "unknown" factor made it very suspenseful and powerful) Humanoids from the deep (from the 80's) Creep Show (80's) Tale of a vampire (it was more eerie and heart-wrenching...it gave a sense of real humanity to the "vampire" compared to traditional vampire movies)

Crossroads with Britany Spears....(i honestly crapped myself the acting was so scary) also as scary....To Kelly from Justin (american Idol flop)
still ahve nightmares...

The Shining - so much scarier than your typical slasher movie.

Slasher movies suck... they all use the same tricks. When are people going to figure that out?

Don't know if this would be considered "horror", but this is a good suspense movie: ARLINGTON ROAD.
