I had goldfish for many years and know what you are talking about. Go ahead and get them some ball toys, with out the little bell in it. For that is metal and will rust in the water and hurt them. But my goldfish loved playing with the balls in the water it was soo funny to watch them. Check out some of the toys meant for cats, alot of that kind of toys I bought for my fish.

My goldfish respond to me too. It's the craziest thing. They'll follow my hand movements and everything.
I've found that they really like moving stuff (puzzled me but hey!)
I put a small troll (the kind made for aquariums) on a bridge in their tank and they move it all the time... back and forth across the bridge. It's like they play with it....
They bump the glass stones at the bottom of the tank too, but I think that's just b/c they are looking for food down there.

OMG!!! They just had a video about training these goldfishes to move around with a guy's hand and they were synchronized, swimming together in a coordinated manner. I think it was posted on yahoo's news but I'll try to find that website for you.
I don't really know of gold fish toys but maybe something small that floats. lol.

Well Wendy, It sort of depends on the age of your fish. How old is it?
So last spring… or, was it May? My lil’ Goldie just wouldn’t play with her
little neutral buoyancy Glow-in-the-dark hoola-hoop any more. She used to swim through it, pop it up with her lil fish nose, and use it to play tug-o-war with the Guaramis. (But he didn’t play nice.) But then all of a sudden she wouldn’t play any more.
So I consulted an Etiologist to see if it was a physical thing. He said no, and recommended a Psyco-ictheologist. Now this guy was smart. He explained
that Goldie was going through her pubescent period and would be more interested in jewelry than toys.
So I packed her up in her little water proof carry bag and went down to the mall so we could pick out something. She swam ferociously around in despair when the kiosk clerk suggested cubic zirconium, so I had to splurge for the real deal and got her a little diamond stud for left pectoral fin.
Now she is all happy and strutting her stuff. Coarse, now all the other fish are jealous. The only way to make fish happy is to be facetious. They pick up on that, trust me.

Maybe you can get a little house thing or boat for it to swim around/through in the tank. Can't really think of any "toys" for goldfish.

Yes fish do respond to us, buy a little float ball, don,t buy anything to small because they can get big and might mistake it for food. I do not have fish now but the goldfish and also tiger oscars respond great. You may need a cover because more active fish jump out of their tank.

They have these glass ornaments - there is a glass bulb that floats on the water, it has a fishing line and tied to it is a glass fish or crab or mermaid or seahorse or whatever.....my fish sort of play with them - you know bump them around.
