Cristiano Ronaldo

nobody can take credit away from cristiano ronaldo for his amazing ball skills and sensational solo runs that often eat up the length of the field.

but taking a closer look as to how many of them have ended in the opponents nets leaves one dissapointed.

i would rather its a case of a contorted attitude in a person with immense talent and potential.

take for example the 2006 FIFA world cup. how many goals were scored off ronaldo's passes? none.

and the only one he sored was off a penalty!!

cristiano ronaldo often forgets that soccer is a team game and the ultimate objective is to score goals. i agree with those who are of the view that if you play the game, then play beuatifully - joga bonita!

i guess all the sheen is lost if you are dispossessed often in your solo runs or if you cap a spectacular run with a mispass. i would rather watch a 'defensive' match rather than a match with more than four fruitless 'runs' by cristiano ronaldo.

all this was amply illustrated in the portugal germany third place match where ronaldo after a zigzag run made a back pass without looking in that direction which was a bit too long for the defender, and germany almost made a goal out of that pathetic piece of 'skills'.

if you check the efficiency quotient of the player on the field and value it more than the 'wow' effect that he brings, ronaldo would never make it to your list of favourite players.

zidane by contrast is a player who actually makes things happen.
there's a whole world of a difference between the two!

Cristiano Ronaldo. He's just so much fun to watch when he has the ball. Zidane's behavior in this World Cup was horrible. It didn't help that he has acted like that before in the past as well.

Zinedine Zidane.
You can't compare young upstarts with a footballing legend.
Cristiano Ronaldo is nowhere near achieving what Zidane had.
So football fangirls, eat your heart out.

I think that comparison is very uneven. Zidane throughout his career has shown his class and skill on the football field. One need only look at his performance in the 98 and 06 WC(excluding the head-butt) and his goal in the 2002 Champions League final to know his greatness. Inspite of being Algeria-born, almost all sections of a divided French society adore him. He is a magician with the ball, but also a complete team player..who always passes the ball when he finds space. He creates spaces for others by drawing 2 or 3 defenders towards him and then leaving them in the dust. But one thing that sets him apart...is that he performs tricks to get past people, not to please the crowd or win supporters or show off. Instead of doin 23 stepovers, he runs at 2 defenders and performs a magnificent 180 turn, every bit as brilliant and awe-inspiring.... but also 100 times more effective in creating space and setting up opportunities for others.

Cristiano Ronaldo...on the other hand....has exceptional talent. But he has a bad head on his shoulders. Very egoistic and definitely a show-off, he sacrifices efficiency to do the extravagant. Time and again he performs unnecessary stepovers on the wing as he approaches a defender and then when he tries to cross the ball, the defender blocks it. So what is achieved???I sincerely hope that Ferguson helps reform him, for his talent is unquestionable. But maybe the best thing for him would be to have ZIZOU as a coach or an advisor, helping him to get his head straight and focus on his football....but until then....

ZIZOU IS THE BEST !!! ALLEZ ZIZOU !!! ALLEZ ZIZOU !!!
