How old is the pledge of aligiance and when was "under God" included?

Under God was added in 1954. In the McCarthy era people were looking for godless commies everywhere. It was a frenzy. Adding "under God" to the pledge was in response to the frenzy.
The pledge was written at the end of 1800's and evolved somewhat in response to events.

Under God was put in place in 1954, the pledge was originally written in 1898 if I remember correctly.
