Everyone is different. In order for each person to become the best they can be, they need to be allowed to grow in different directions and in different ways. This does not just include religious freedom, but also political freedom, cultural freedom, freedom of thought ect. The more freedom a person has the more they are allowed to realize their true potential.
If everyone in a country were required to become professional baseball players, some people would do very well and some would do very poorly based on the raw talents that they were born with. The overall average of how productive and happy the country was would be much lower than if everyone was allowed to do what they do best.
The same is true for religion. By allowing each individual to choose the religion that suites them best and maximizes their potential to become the best person they can be, the country as a whole benefits.

You are kidding, right?
We had religious liberty for most of the first 200 years the USA was in existence. A feeble bunch of primitive colonies became the greatest nation on earth.
Ever since Madeline Murray OHare had God taken out of the schools, the USA has been going you-know-where in a handbasket.

How can any freedom, e.g., religion. speech, press, help in the progress of a county? It is not the freedom itself, but the denial of the freedom. Denial of one freedom generally means that additional freedoms are also denied. Denial represses the people, ideas, and innovation.

It allows for diversity of opinions.
It keeps the government from being run by one religious group over another.
It avoids situations like having to convert your beliefs because the leader of the country believes something different from you (like what happened historically in England)
