Charcoal is the darkess black color you can find for really dark black shades, then you use the next higher number grade close to charcoal. I think the higher the number the softer the lead is, and the darker the shade of any drawing pencils.

There are actually things called drawing pencils. You can find them at a walmart and they work pretty well of dark and light shading. ( I love the things and will Tell any random artist to buy them )
