Out of the weather and with in easy reach from the helm. Usually to the kick panel where you can reach it but not kick it.

Carlos and Justanother have the basics covered.....and let me re-emphasis mounting an automatic system in the engine box, as 90 percent of fires start there, and you DONT want to OPEN and engine box to use a handheld extinguisher.....can we say "FIREBALL", boys and girls?
and where ever you pick to mount the extinguisher make sure its at least 3.....and 6 would be better... feet away from the compass or you'll have some interesting readings!

Why not mount 2 or more?
One in the side panel area under the steering wheel and one near the engine compartment.
A better idea is to have the second one be an automatic halon extinguisher in the engine compartment

To summarize all the good points made:
1. two fire extinguishers are better than one
2. mount one near you at the helm seat area
3. do not mount one near a potential fire hazard spot
4. if you can afford it install an automated halon type system

Fire extinguishers are needed for the engine, in the galley, and perhaps in the forward berth. They do need to be mounted securely. For a 24 foot, galley and engine compartment. One should be near the helm and one in the enclosed area. For an IO there must be one in the engine compartment.

Dry chem should be mounted Horizontally (NOT VERTICALLY), strange, I know but, check with the CG, It's true, this prevents the dry chem from caking. If it's mounted Vertically already, just turn the ext. upside down and tap the bottom to break up the caking from pounding the waves, about 1X a week is good.

Can you mount it to the bottom of your seat? The one on the boat, that is. It would be close by, and out of the way.

If you are the operator, I would mount it as close as I could to the steering wheel console.
