Depends on when you plan on coming. I think the other 2 responders are correct if you plan on coming soon (like by the end of the year) that a license (or other picture id) and your original birth certificate (not a copy) seem to be the current requirement. We keep hearing that passports are going to be needed soon starting in 2007 despite complaints from many r/e the extra cost to get their passport (doesn't affect me personally because I've had one for close to 20 years) which is now around $100; still not sure if and when the new restrictions will take place. Don't forget you can also come up to my neck of the woods- Port Huron- and cross into Canada using the Bluewater Bridge(s); if you have the extra hour to spend to go from Detroit to Port Huron (and then back) it is an interesting drive to compare the big city to the inner suburbs to outer suburbs to the decreasingly rural areas along that stretch (then again we've had construction projects going on in this area seemingly forever so it may be a pain to come up here). I do think you would find the Port Huron area a bit "nicer" than Detroit but, on the other hand, I think Windsor, Ontario is nicer and more intersting than crossing into Sarnia, Ontario. Wherever you decide to cross (either place in Detroit or up in Port Huron) you always have the possiblity of delays (sometimes up to an hour) to make the crossing. If you haven't made the crossing into Canada before, you may want to take the tunnel going one way and the ambassador Bridge going the other way just for the sake of having both experiences; I don't think they are very far from one another. If you need any further info, advice for either (Detroit- was just down there yesterday watching the Tigers play their worst game of the year- or Port Huron) area, shoot me a message.

I go over to Windsor all the time - as of right now, you need a government issued photo ID as well as your original birth certificate or, alternatively, a passport.
I have always found the tunnel to be faster, but the bridge is more scenic.

Unless you have a passport, you have to have both a picture ID and your Birth Certificate.
Starting in 08, you will have to have a passport.
Do the Bridge, you have great views.
