I have given more than a lions share of money away to not just panhandlers but to those in real honest need in my life even when I didn't really have it to give.

Now, I will not directly give money anymore but, instead if food baskets are available or needed items (clothing, shoes, pre-paid coupons) I will give those away only.

I used to because I felt sorry for them then I saw one of them wearing an expensive pair of trainers [running shoes]. After that if they asked me for spare change I would tell them I'd take them to McDonald's or Burger King but they wouldn't get cash from me. Most were pretty happy with the deal, what they did with the food - whether they ate it or not - was none of my concern.
