10. Redline 7000 (1965): This story of stock car drivers and the women in their lives is by no means a great movie. James Caan is the star, but the movie has more songs than it does plot. The racing footage -- from Daytona, Darlington, Charlotte and Riverside -- saves the movie. Speed Lovers, a '68 movie starring top NASCAR driver Fred Lorenzen as himself, also has great footage of actual NASCAR races from the mid-'60s.

9. The Love Bug movies: Herbie Fully Loaded (2005), with Lindsay Lohan as the driving attraction, is all NASCAR but isn't the best of this five-movie series. The Love Bug, the '69 Disney movie that features Dean Jones as a down-and-out driver and Andy Granatelli as himself, is much better.

8. Stroker Ace (1983): Actor Burt Reynolds and director Hal Needham owned a Winston Cup team when they made this movie, but that didn't get them around the track. Jim Nabors is horrible as a crew chief while Reynolds dresses up as a chicken for his sponsor, but the movie is a comedy.

7. Greased Lightning (1977): Comedian Richard Pryor proved he could do serious drama as he played Wendell Scott. The plot is simple: Scott overcomes adversity to become the only black man to ever driver regularly on NASCAR's top circuit, where he faces even more adversity.

6. Speedway (1968): Elvis Presley, when he's not singing, drives his way around Charlotte Motor Speedway to pay off an IRS bill for back taxes. The movie is spiced up by love interest Nancy Sinatra and cameos by drivers such as Cale Yarborough and Richard Petty. Elvis is the king of racing movies, also starring in Viva Las Vegas and Spinout. He tries to raise money to buy an engine for a Grand Prix race in Las Vegas in one movie, then road races a hot Cobra 427 while being chased by beauties in the other.

5. Six Pack (1982): Perhaps the corniest racing movie ever made, it gets its name from a group of six kids who serve as mechanics for a down-and-out driver. Kenny Rogers, better know for his singing than acting, is the driver.

4. Cars (2006): Also corny, but what do you expect from a G-rated, animated film. The story of Lightning McQueen, a rookie who learns the importance of friendship, will play well for kids for decades. Don't be surprised if this becomes the most commercially successful racing film ever. Paul Newman is great as the voice of a retired driver.

3. 43: The Richard Petty Story (1973): The fact that Richard Petty starred as himself at the height of his career makes this movie belong on everybody's top-10 list. A low budget film with some great racing footage.

2. Days of Thunder (1990): Sometimes it seems like this movie is a little bit of NASCAR 101, with Robert Duvall explaining "rubbing" and Tom Cruise doing an exciting drafting demonstration for Nicole Kidman. The best racing takes place in rental cars. But the movie had a big-time budget with big-name stars, sprinkled cameos of NASCAR drivers and was filmed primarily at NASCAR races. Plus, it borrowed shamelessly from true NASCAR stories and personalities, giving most fans something to enjoy. Finally, Thunder deserves credit in helping NASCAR go mainstream.

1. The Last American Hero (1973): This tale of moonshine running and stock-car racing got two thumbs up from NASCAR legend Junior Johnson, which is a good thing since the movie is based on his life. Actually, the movie is based on a '64 article about Johnson in Esquire magazine by writer Tom Wolfe. In the highest of compliments, Johnson says the movie is an accurate portrayal of NASCAR's early days. While the story line is great, actors Jeff Bridges, Ned Beatty and Gary Busey give the movie its grit and substance.

Hope this helps. Enjoy.

There was a movie with Burt Reynolds called Stoker Ace.It also starred Ned Beatty and Loni Anderson. It is based on sponsorship as Burt has to wear a Chicken suit while driving the car. It is pretty funny if you like comedy with the racing. I would rate it a 3. Someone who doesn't like racing or understand it probaly wouldn't care for it.

It will probably be of no interest to the NASCAR folks, however, arguably the best racing move ever made, John Frankenheimer's classic, Grand Prix, is finally available on DVD in the U.S. and Canada.
Le Mans, with Steve McQueen is another `must see' for the serious racing fan.

As of this point only one person mentions "Le Mans" with Steve McQueen, one of the all time must see classics. This movie has a outstanding view of all the elements of top level motorsports. Can Fast and Furious movies even be considered racing movies. What loads of crap.

LeMans with Steve McQueen was really good.

So was The Last American Hero.

The Pixar movie Cars I thought was better, by far, than Days of Thunder, and I'm a longtime NASCAR fan. Days was just bad, bad, bad.
