My Mates Polo is having some problems with the engine. it runs fine except when you get it up to the higher speeds and higher rev's the engine seems to hit a limiter which shouldn't be there. I'm thinking it could be the coil or maybe the HT leads. But has anyone got some other ideas. Many Thanks

Not misfiring car running fine. it's just like a rev limiter but coming in two early. Looks like he's going to get raped by the vw dealership.

p.s mk4 is 1997 1.4cl 60bhp 8v

No it's not the valves bouncing. valves don't tend to bounce on modern ish cars becasue they all have limiters

Depends on what you mean by higher revs.

Could be he's over revving it and getting valve bounce.

Is the engine misfireing?
Check all plugs - also make sure airfilter is clean..

Maybe airflow sensor has gone - best best really is to hook it up to a diagnostics tool - should give you an idea about the general area of the fault.

The best thing for your mate to do is to go back to the seller and ask after this. Is it a new car? Or as I am thinking a second hand one?

I expect its the coil. its a fault that my ex wifes car had. the complete unit was about 140 quid and vw repaired it under warranty
